Dana spent nine years processing claims for a regional hospital before opening Heartland. Most of what the agency does differently comes out of that: the questions are about your doctors and your medications first, because those are what actually determined whether a claim was paid.

She takes the households with complicated income — self-employment, seasonal farm income, a spouse with employer coverage — which are the ones the estimate goes wrong for.

Where we do not have a real photograph of someone, we show their initials rather than a stock image. Putting an invented face next to a real name on an insurance website is a small dishonesty, and this is not a business where those help.
